I will be putting forward a proposal to Southwark Council for funding under their Cleaner Greener Safer programme to convert the carpark in Daniel's Road (between the existing green area and the playground) into a green/community garden space. Please visit the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Daniels-Green-Nunhead/357467484283631 to show your support or add suggestions/comments. Thanks!

Kieta - This is a great idea. My kid goes to the child-minders across the road. This is south facing so gets loads of sun. Suggets that you perhaps leaflet the houses opposite and backing on and find out what they want. Allotment space an idea. Good luck - Shane

    Thanks for the support!
Shane - we have put a few leaflets around daniel's road (hope your childminder got one!) and some up by the playground and in library. Not sure if there would be room for allotments but we are keen on edible plants.
    Anymore ideas from anyone?
We are keen to get a bit more support for the Facebook page so spread the word!

    Hiya

Just a quick post on process for this funding stream. There were 71 applications for the Nunhead & Peckham Rye Community Council Cleaner, Greener Safer fund 2012/13. The ward cllrs from Nunhead, Peckham Rye and The Lane wards have shortlisted that down to 34 schemes.

Tomorrow evening all the shortlisted applicants have the opportunity to present (briefly!) their suggestions to councillors at a public meeting at 7pm, Rye Lane Baptist Chapel (nr Primark). The councillors will then meet again to decide how to divi up our budget (around £240k, which means we can't fund all 34 schemes) and our decisions will be announced at the Community Council meeting on Thursday, 7pm Rye Lane Baptist Chapel.

On this scheme, what I can say at this stage is that I certainly find it very appealing to do something with that barely used space (that's why we shortlisted it). The question I'll be asking tomorrow night will be about community commitment to maintaining it - we've funded a few community garden schemes in the past where two years (or less) later they have become scruffy and overgrown eyesores as the "community" have not been maintaining it. So I'll want to be sure that if the council spends the money to get it started there really is a group of people committed to looking after it long term.

    Regards

    Hi,

I live on Daniels Road, almost opposite the carpark and I would certainly be happy to commit time and energy into looking after it alongside our neighbours.

And an edible plant patch (like the one by Brockley station) would be brilliant, some benches and perhaps a path linking all three areas (the grassed area, playground and old carpark) would be nice too.

My kitchen sink directly overlooks the larger patch of grass which leads down to Tappesfield Road so I spend a fair amount of time looking at it and, despite the fact it has a few trees and is well kept by Southwark Council, it does feel like a glorified dog toilet - I only ever see people walk over it to collect their dog's 'contributions' (or not, but that's a different issue entirely).

Creating a sense of being able to stop for a brief sit down on Daniels Road would be a really positive contribution to the estate as a whole. There is a fair amount of foot traffic; people en route to the cemetery, station, Brockley, Peckham Rye, doctors, Nunhead Lane, schools, the amazing childminder (who looks after my daughter too) etc I do think a place to pause would be a delightful addition to a pleasant, well used residential street.

Please do feel free to rope me in to pushing/helping...

    best
    Juliet
